Mike Thomas

Mike's tenure with the firm spans three (3) decades of civil trial work. Before joining the firm in 1983, Mike spent seven (7) years in private practice with firms in Kansas City and St. Louis, Missouri; the two (2) largest metropolitan areas in the state.

His principal practice focus encompasses professional liability defense and resolution of construction disputes. Mike has represented real estate brokers/agents, insurance producers and design professionals over the years. His representation of architects and engineers emanated from long-standing involvement in complex construction litigation matters and defense of insurance professionals. Additionally, Mike handles defense of personal injury/wrongful death, insurance coverage and commercial disputes on a recurrent basis.

Mike graduated from Drake University (with honors) in 1973, and received his juris doctorate degree (with distinction) from the University of Missouri-Kansas City in 1976. He is a member of The Missouri Bar (1976) and Kansas Bar Association (1991), and is licensed to practice before the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Missouri, U.S. District Court for the District of Kansas, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit and U.S. Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit. He handles trial and appellate defense engagements in both Missouri and Kansas.

His professional affiliations include memberships in the Federation of Defense and Corporate Counsel (Professional Liability, Construction and Technology & E-Commerce Sections), Defense Research Institute, Missouri Organization of Defense Lawyers (Board of Directors, 1993-99), Kansas City Metropolitan Bar Association and Johnson County (Kansas) Bar Association.

Mike is a native of Kansas City, Missouri. He and his wife, Susan (a Vice-President of U.S. Bank), live in Leawood, Kansas, and are anxiously looking forward to their sons' completion of college and graduate school enrollments, and procurement of the gainful employment necessary to preservation of the "empty" status of the current nest.
